Worm farming, also known as vermicomposting, is an eco-friendly and efficient way to recycle organic waste while producing nutrient-rich compost. Worms are the unsung heroes of the composting world. Your worm farm can also lean into reducing wastage by utilising other objects. For example, our worm bed is an old bath, which my husband Lionel made a metal frame for it to sit up off the ground. It is now high enough to sit a bucket underneath to catch all the liquid. He also put an old dishwasher filter over the plug hole so no worms fall through.

Have you heard of Deciduous Trees? They are a fascinating group of plants that shed their leaves seasonally. This unique adaptation allows them to survive in regions with distinct seasonal variations, especially in temperate climates. Unlike evergreen trees, which retain their foliage throughout the year, deciduous trees undergo a process called “abscission” during Autumn.

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, deciduous trees begin to prepare for Winter. The production of chlorophyll (the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis), slows down and eventually ceases. As chlorophyl breaks down, other pigments in the leaves, such as carotenoids (yellow and orange) and anthocyanins (red and purple), become more prominent.

This magical transformation of deciduous trees is not only visually stunning, but also serves a vital ecological purpose. By shedding their leaves, these trees minimise water loss and prevent damage during harsh winter conditions.

Not all Pots are created Equal

Have you ever had a plant that has become root bound? How about one that’s suffered root rot? These are common issues that you can experience when using plastic pots.

Because plastic pots are just that, plastic, as your plant grows and develops, the roots of the plant can curl as they hit the sides of a plastic pot, causing it to become root bound. Ideally, you would prefer your plant to air prune and become healthier and stronger in the process. Coir fibre pots allow for air pruning because when the roots hit the side of the pot they are exposed to air, and when the air hits the roots, they burn off. This causes the roots to grow more fibrous and denser, which in turn leads to a healthier plant with better nutrient absorption.

Another issue you may encounter due to the makeup of plastic, is root rot. Should your soil become too wet, the roots of your plant become saturated, and with the density of plastic, there is no way for air to pass through to oxygenate the roots, causing them to rot. This is where one of our hero products enters to save the day, and your plants.

Our coir fibre pots are made from the husk of a coconut and natural latex, the sap from a rubber tree. This fibrous husk has always been used to make ropes, rugs, baskets, and bedding, but these products only use some of the husk, and a collection of finer coir fibres remain. These were once discarded but, in more recent years, have found a place in horticulture. To make these pots, the coco fibres are washed and dried, then shaped into pots using moulds. Some factories still shape them by hand, but they are mostly made using machinery and moulds to press the pots into shape.

Coir pots are 100% natural, 100% biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and safe to use. These pots are ideal for transplanting new plants as they can be placed directly into the ground, so there is no transplant shock. Or use them for your indoor plants; they look natural and earthy, are lightweight, and are efficiently utilised in patio gardening.

Coco coir is a very sustainable material. Coconut trees benefit the environment by reducing carbon dioxide. A coconut tree can produce up to 150 coconuts in a year and live up to 80 years, so creating numerous coir products without harming the environment is easy.

There is no wasted part of this tree; many different products are produced.

It is an excellent tree to promote. These pots also mean that we are decreasing both plastic wastes, and the carbon footprint associated with plastic production.

Coir fibre is rich in nutrients like iron, potassium, copper, and zinc. Coir's high cation-exchange rate allows it to readily supply these nutrients to plants that it encounters. Coco coir has a neutral pH value between 5.2 and 6.8, so it's a versatile choice for plants of nearly any variety.

Now is the perfect time to either start or refresh your veggie patch. There is something so wholesome and satisfying about eating produce that you’ve grown and cared for yourself. You don’t need a lot of space to create a veggie patch and can even purchase raised garden beds to make it even easier to grow your own food at home.

This time of year, there is so much that you can plant and enjoy in the lead up to Winter. These include:

Potatoes
Leek
Beetroot
Carrots
Onions
Broccoli plus many more

Herbs are also a great resource to have in your own back yard and during Winter, if looked after correctly, herbs like Thyme, Mint, Coriander and Basil can thrive within the colder climates.

If you’re a starter to a vegetable patch we’ve got a proven recipe for success to get you started.

Once you’ve figured out where you want to put your veggie garden, you’ll want to weed, dig, and rake the area to make sure there are no rocks in your soil to impede your vegetables growth. Ideally at this point, you will mix your soil with aged manure or compost, which will build up the nutrients in your soil and give your vegetables the best chance to take and grow.

Next up, put some dripper hose down to facilitate watering your new source of sustenance. This will make it super easy come watering time and help cut down any water wastage.

We have the perfect product for the next stage of your vegetable garden. Our Veggie Rolls are rolls of our coir fibre matting that come in a roll that is 3 metres long and 25 centimetres wide. Rolling these mats out over the top of your soil protects from erosion, supresses weeds and keeps the moisture down at the base of your plants.

Once your soil is prepped and your dripper hose is run, lay down rows of Veggie Roll . How this looks will be dependent on how big your patch is, but here is a photo of one of our veggie patches.

You want to plant your seeds or seedlings in between your rows of matting. This gives your seeds/seedlings all the glorious sunshine and aeration that they need, whilst helping to keep your soil moist and protected from the elements as your veggies grow and mature. Before long it will be time to harvest your patch! Once your harvest is complete, simply roll up the matting and start again. I estimate that I will get two lots of veggies from the matting before it will need replacing.

As we round into Autumn it’s the perfect time to give your soil a little TLC. I thought that this month’s blog was timely to talk about preparing and maintaining your soil to ensure the best yield from your garden. It’s important to start caring for your soil before any plants enter the ground.

My garden is now 3 years old and have found that it’s the preparation that makes all the difference for a successful plant. Planning on how you’re going to maintain nutrients in your soil is also important to remember. Our coir fibre mats can help with this key step.

To begin, we brought in some fresh garden mix soil and put it down where the trees were to be planted, then set up drippers, planted the Ornamental Pear trees, and put coir fibre mats around them to protect the soil and stop erosion.

The next rows that went in were small Hinterland Gold Lilly Pillies and some other shrubs; they have mats around them too. Then I scattered Cosmos seeds everywhere (I love cosmos, they are such happy flowers) and planted sunflower seeds. This was to have an instant garden display while waiting for the other trees to become established. We have trellis for roses and tomatoes and a veggie garden amongst it, but the cosmos act as a windbreak and nice colour while it's all getting established.

When the Cosmos look tacky, I chop and drop them back into the garden, where they self-seed, but in some patches, I put lawn clippings and animal manure on top of them to let it sit and break down, the sunflower stalks go to the chook pen for the chooks to pulverise it then it goes back out onto the garden bed of cosmos stalks.

I'm finding that under each cosmos crop, there are fewer and fewer weeds, and the soil is holding water better. The coir fibre mats are looking after the trees and shrubs that will grow and fill in, then there won't be as much room for the cosmos to grow, but the trees will create a protected area.

Why Cosmos - they grow in full sun from spring through to autumn and give beautiful colour. Kosmos in Greek means beautiful. They provide easy nectar & pollen; they are magnets for beneficial insects: lacewings, parasitic wasps, tachinid flies, & hoverflies that feed on many pest insects. They are easy to grow even in poor soils. Choose open-pollinated varieties, not hybrids.

A fantastic resource for all gardeners’ beginners or seasoned is Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA). They have numerous workshops, gardening tips and information about all things gardening.

When looking after my grandchildren, I encourage them to eat their vegetables, get plenty of playtime and rest to help them grow up big and strong. It dawned on me the other day that plants and humans have a lot in common when it comes to our basic needs.

In this month’s blog, I thought we’d return to basics and look at the seven things a plant needs.

The seven basics

Air

Like you and me, plants won’t survive without air, the cleaner, the better. Air pollutants, including smoke and gas, can damage a plant. Plants use the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and return it as oxygen.

Water

Another simple thing that plants like us can’t do without is water. But there is a thing as too much water. Too little or too much can potentially kill the plant. Giving the plant just the right amount of water ensures it’s not stressed.

Light

An essential energy source for all indoor and outdoor plants is light. If a plant is green, it will need some sunlight to grow.

Nutrients

There are three vital nutrients a plant needs;

Nitrogen , for above-the-ground growth

Phosphorous , aids flower and seed production and assists with developing strong roots.

And Potassium , helps to fight off disease and assists with growing long stems.

Temperature

Just like us, some plants like it hot while others like a cooler temperature. Generally, most plants want to be kept cool at night.

Room to grow

When it comes to space, a plant knows exactly what it needs to thrive. The leaves don’t like to be crowded as it can stop them from getting the necessary sunlight. The roots need to spread out to absorb water and nutrients.

Time

Plants need time to grow, and they also need time to rest. Too much or too little time in darkness or sunlight can impact the growth and performance of the plant.

How coir-fibre protected my garden

The recent weather events have destroyed so much, and my heart goes out to anyone who has faced these floods. Mother nature is powerful; she often reminds us that we don't control everything. But we can do our best to protect our gardens!

When I put the coir fibre around the trees and plants in my garden, I was doing it mainly to protect them from the elements like heat, wind, and low rainfall. But it turns out coir-fibre works well in the wet periods too!

Our yard was flooded about three weeks ago. The trees out the front of our property are still sitting in water, but they appear to be under no stress, and I believe this is thanks to the coir-fibre matting I have laid.

The coir-fibre mats during all this rain have held their shape and have assisted with protecting valuable nutrients in the soil from being leached. When I’ve lifted up the mats, I’ve also been happy to see the worms happily working away. They also appear to be unaffected from the rain.

As a result of all the recent rain, I'm currently experimenting with adding an extra a layer of newspaper underneath the coir fibre to give further protection., and it appears to be working well.

Where does coir fibre come from?

As we travel around attending markets and events, there is a lot of curiosity about what we sell. We get asked many questions, including: "Where do you get the coir fibre?" When we answer that it comes from the husk of coconuts, we see heads spinning. This is fair enough, given that we're a business based in the Mallee that is renowned for being flat and often very dry—a landscape that is not suitable for growing tropical fruit like coconuts.

In this blog, I'm taking you behind the scenes and sharing the journey of how we discovered coir fibre and where we source ours from.

The search for a solution

Growing a garden in arid parts of Australia like the Mallee comes with challenges: wind, dust, extreme heat, winter frosts, and low rainfall. But knowing how particularly important it is to have a garden for those of us living in these harsh, desert-like conditions took us on the journey to find a sustainable solution that would allow the plants in our gardens not just survive but to thrive.

When we commenced the search, we didn't know where it would lead us. Because caring for our environment is our overarching ethos, we had to think outside of the square. Using plastic was not an option.

We searched far and wide throughout Australia and the globe to discover the ultimate solution: coir fibre—a product that not only guards the plants against the elements, allowing them to grow (not just survive), but it also eventually breaks down back into the ground. Coir fibre is manufactured in several countries, including Thailand, Sri Lanka, and China.

Eventually, we found a supplier in China who kindly sent us samples. When we tried these samples in our garden, we confirmed that coir fibre was exactly what we were looking for. Since then, we have had supplies sent from Sri Lanka.

The next step…the leap of faith

Have you ever heard the phrase "nothing is ever straightforward"? When we knew we'd found the right product, we enquired about making an order. We learnt that the minimum order was a 20-ft shipping container consisting of 4000 mats in four different sizes. This was a rather large order for something we didn't yet have a market for.

Then there was the process of paperwork, shipping, biosecurity, quarantine, insurance, and freight forwarders. Bringing a plant-based product into Australia is tightly controlled so that there are no unwanted bugs entering our country.

With so many hurdles in front of us, we could have easily decided it was too hard. But instead, we trusted our intuition. We knew that we'd found the solution we went searching for. We went ahead and ordered.

You may wonder what our contingency plan was if there was no interest in the coir fibre. Our only Plan B was to protect every plant and tree standing on our own property with coir fibre!

Thankfully, coir fibre has been well received. We have expanded and now offer a variety of gardening solutions using coir fibre, including:

WHO ARE WE, AND WHAT DO WE DO?

Hello, my name is Karen Mott, and together with my husband Lionel, we’re the owners of GuardnGrow.

After 37 years in our Swan Hill based household electrical repairs business, we wanted to make a change. While many thought this change was retirement, we had bigger ideas! We set out to change our business model that focused largely on caring for our planet. We saw this next phase of our lives as an opportunity to give back to the beautiful world we live in.

WHY DID WE WANT TO MAKE THE CHANGE?

Over our 37 years in the repair business, we saw a drastic change in how our homes and workplaces operate. Electrical items have gone from being one-off large purchases to inexpensive throw-away items.

The alarming impact this throw-away world has on our planet is what concerns us. Singlehandedly we can’t change the disposable world we live in, but we can do our bit to protect our precious planet. This is our ‘why’.

We started looking for a business idea that would ultimately benefit the environment, give us a voice to educate others on the importance of protecting our planet, and ideally allow us to share our love of the garden.

WHAT DID WE COME UP WITH?

After hours of research, we found a product that ticked all the boxes of our brief; coir fibre weed/mulch mats. Once we found this product, GuardnGrow was born, and we’ve been importers of the 100% natural and biodegradable coir fibre weed/mulch mats ever since.

WHAT IS COIR-FIBRE, AND WHY DO WE LIKE IT SO MUCH?

Coir comes from coconuts. It is a natural fibre taken from the husks of coconuts, which are essentially a waste product.

The beauty of coir-fibre is that it’s a truly renewable resource. It’s bio-degradable and will eventually decompose into the surrounding soil. However, it retains its structure and absorbency for many years and acts as a soil conditioner without any adverse implications to the environment. Because it’s a plant-based product from sustainably managed plantations, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, further reducing its carbon footprint.
